What size should your nametag be?

Nearly every nametag is three inches wide. What changes is the height, and the height decides how much you can put on it before it starts to look crowded.

The sizes we make

• 1" × 3": a name, or a name and a small logo beside it. The most discreet option, and the one that suits a shirt pocket best.
• 1.25" × 3": a name and a title, or a logo above a name. A good middle.
• 1.5" × 3": a logo across the top and two lines under it, with room to breathe. This is the size most organizations end up choosing.
• 1" × 3.25": the same height as the smallest but a little wider, for a long name or a wide logo that will not squeeze into three inches.

Start from the longest name

The tag has to work for everybody on the list, not for the average. Find the longest name and the longest job title you are ordering, and design around those two. A tag that fits "Bob Fry, Owner" comfortably will make "Christina Vandermolen, Assistant Director of Operations" tiny.

If one or two names are much longer than the rest, we can set those individually so the batch still looks consistent. Tell us, or just look at the proof, where every name is shown on the second proof if you ask for one.

How much a logo needs

It depends on the shape, and it is the opposite of what most people expect. A square logo is happy on the 1" x 3": it sits beside the name at the full height of the tag and still leaves two inches for the words.

A wide logo is the one that needs a taller tag. It will not fit beside the name, so it goes across the top instead, and then you need the height underneath for a name and a title. That is the 1.5" x 3".

How it looks worn

A 1.5" tag is a real presence on a shirt, which is what you want at a conference or a reception desk, where people read it from four feet away. A 1" tag is quieter and suits somewhere the tag is there to identify somebody, not to introduce them.
